Course Introduction
In an age where information is an asset, the proper handling and protection of personal data is critical for every organization. South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) set out clear guidelines on how personal information should be collected, processed, stored, and shared. This course provides a practical understanding of both Acts, their recent amendments, and the responsibilities they impose on both public and private bodies. Participants will leave equipped to ensure their organizations remain compliant, avoid legal risk, and protect the rights of individuals.
Course Objectives

- Understand key terminology used in POPIA and PAIA, such as “data subject” and “personal information”.
- Differentiate between public and private bodies as defined in the Acts.
- Identify the role and authority of the Information Regulator.
- Understand the purpose, scope, and differences between POPIA and PAIA.
- Know what organizational compliance with POPIA involves, including data protection responsibilities.
- Know what compliance with PAIA entails, including access to information procedures.
- Understand the roles of Information Officers and Deputy Information Officers.
- Learn about the recent amendments to the POPIA and their impact.
- Understand what the POPI4ME Program is and how it supports compliance with POPIA and PAIA.
